The key to restful sleep? Finish your day first

Do your thoughts keep racing at bedtime? Many of us carry the weight of unfinished tasks, lingering emotions, or mental to-do lists into the night, often without realizing it. But without a clear transition from activity to rest, true relaxation can be hard to find.

It is essential to resolve your day before going to bed because it helps calm the mind, reduce mental clutter, and prepare your nervous system for deep rest. When you carry unresolved thoughts, emotions, or stress into the night, your brain stays active, processing, problem-solving, or replaying events, which can make it harder to fall asleep or stay asleep.

Taking time to reflect, release tension, and mentally “close the day” sends a signal to your body that it’s safe to shift into rest mode. This not only improves sleep quality but also helps you wake up feeling clearer and more grounded, rather than weighed down by yesterday’s leftovers.

Here are three simple strategies to help you resolve your day, so you can unwind, sleep better, and wake up refreshed.

When the world goes quiet, do your thoughts get louder? Take a peek into the mental activity that keeps you up at night and explore other practical strategies you can use to help reduce the vigilance of your nervous system.
