From iSlump to alignment: Working with postural dysfunction in the thoracic and cervical spine

Postural dysfunction is more than just a matter of slouching; it’s a structural imbalance that can lead to a cascade of physical and functional issues over time. When the spine, muscles, and connective tissues lose their ability to support proper alignment, it can result in chronic tension, pain, reduced mobility, and even impaired breathing. In today’s world of prolonged screen time, desk jobs, and digital devices, these misalignments in the thoracic (mid-back) and cervical (neck) spine have become increasingly common. Left unaddressed, postural dysfunction can contribute to headaches, shoulder and neck pain, decreased lung capacity, and nervous system dysregulation. Fortunately, yoga therapy offers powerful tools to help reverse these patterns and restore healthy posture.

In this new video series, Emily Olson, a certified Yoga Therapist and licensed Physical Therapist Assistant, shares three compelling case studies from her clinical practice. Emily’s integrative approach bridges modern physical therapy with traditional yogic practices, offering a whole-person path to healing.

While each student’s story is unique, all three case studies center around variations of postural dysfunction in the upper spine. Emily uses these case studies to highlight four common signs of dysfunction:

  • Exaggerated kyphotic curve in the thoracic spine
  • Forward head posture
  • Hyperextension in the upper cervical spine
  • Restricted breathing due to habitual chest breathing

Through these real-life scenarios, Emily demonstrates how yoga therapy can be used to restore alignment and function using yogic practices such as asana, pranayama, mindfulness, and meditation.

This case study series is designed for yoga teachers and therapists. It highlights how students with the same structural condition can benefit from different types of practices.

JUST RELEASED: Introduction. Presentations of postural dysfunction

In the first video, Emily Olson, E-IAYT, explains that postural dysfunction in the neck and upper back commonly presents in clients as limited shoulder range of motion, restricted thoracic and cervical spine mobility, headaches, and shallow breathing. She also explains how the restricted movement of the diaphragm caused by a kyphotic posture places strain on the secondary respiratory muscles and contributes to pain and discomfort.
